Busy Busy Weekend
Nov. 1st, 2010 01:21 pmGot back from con last night, just in time to clean the porch, display the pumpkins, and hand out candy. We got less kids than last year, but had bought more candy. Oops. Now we have crap tons of candy left over!
The con was.... well it could have been more eventful, but it was good. I hosted my yearly fandom party on friday, which was a success. And I got enough donations during it to cover the suite, the booze, the food, AND tip my three friends who bartended $20 each for their efforts. :D score!
Saturday was an early 7am start so we could check out of the suite, get our registration, and set up our dealers table in the fan market to be opened at 10am. Worst. Location. EVER. It just reinforces how much I hate the people who run this con. It was a new hotel this year, and we were assured a large enough location that the Fan Market would be all in one place, with enough space for everyone. (in previous years, we'd been divided up to two or even three rooms) THEY DIDN'T TELL US WE'D BE OUTSIDE. >:C It was this.. pavilion thing used for wedding receptions. The single pro: It was big. The many cons: Cold. Damp. Long walk from the rest of the con. SMELLED LIKE SWAMP. At one point it smelled like wet dog on fire. >:CCCC Oh wait, more cons: The walls were vinyl and thus if someone in the middle of the night wanted to get into the pavilion to steal and/or ruin any of our merchandise, all they'd need was a boxcutter. AGH.
We overheard many people who attended (and were just the customer type) complain of the long walk to the Fan Market. THANKS, PEOPLE-RUNNING-THIS-CON, YOU PROBABLY HALFED OUR CUSTOMER BASE.
We made a little over $400 this year, which I think is so far our worst year to date.
I enjoy vending. I like the salesmanship aspect. I like people squealing over my art and asking me to sign the books for them. I like the networking and interesting conversations with other artists/venders.
Fun things of note:
--My MP Grimlock was our table's booth babe. We had him standing over our business cards, holding one up. X)
--A Japanese publishing company came around interviewing artists ontheir thoughts on yaoi their work, their books, how they felt about the fan industry. They were also asking for a donated book that they would display at this winter's Comiket. *SQUEAL* One of my doujinshi is going to be displayed at Comiket!!!! ::explode::
--Spent saturday night after dinner on my laptop, half-drunk and making fun of bad fanfic with
spacehussy. What a great way to unwind!
--Grimlock actually got a lot of attention at the con. XD He was the party mascot, the booth babe, and on friday night, as I was riding in the elevator, this other girl asked me a question about room numbers and then was like ".........is that a Masterpiece Grimlock?" YES. YOU GET A GOLD STAR. <3 On saturday, this one other girl felt the need to tell me about her crack "getting Duo's Gundam pregnant" story because of Grimlock. NO. NO. NO. NO GOLD STARS FOR YOU. AUGH.
Okay. Time for lunch. I'll post photos later today. ::waddles off::
