Any of you guys out there reading IDW's stuff? I got into the comics a little late in the game, back in april/may-ish, and so didn't pick up any of the The Transformers ongoing IDW thing at that time. When the trade, For All Mankind, came out I snagged it. It's got issues 1-6, and while I'm not a huge fan of Figueroa's art, I do love Costa's writing.

Well, I looked at what the local comic store had for issues on the shelf, and they still had 8 through 11 (sakjhsakj GUIDI ART I LOVE YOU). So I'm just missing #7 now. I'm sure I can snag it some place.

What the point of this post is: issue number 8. Now, I love Costa's writing. When he's dealing directly with the Transformers, everything flows really well and has great pacing, dialog, and dynamic. But when Spike is the focus everything goes to shit.

Issue 8, along with Saltares' mediocre art (attack of the dramatic cheekbones, anyone?), is just..... boring. I mean, Spike fights one-on-one with Scrapper, and there's tension brewing with the higher-ups and Spike's father/commanding officer, but that's it.

Scrapper, the only transformer in the whole issue, doesn't even show up until page 16.

It's like, Costa's got some hard-on for Spike that makes him lose his ability to write coherently.

The whole issue is SPIKE IS A MAN. A CONFLICTED BUT ALSO DRIVEN MAN. WATCH HIM PUMP IRON. LISTEN TO HIM MONOLOGUE. WATCH HIM SINGLE-HANDEDLY TAKE OUT A FUCKING GIANT ROBOT WITHOUT GUNS OR ANYTHING. LOOK AT HIS AMAZING ABS YOU CAN SOMEHOW SEE THROUGH HIS LEATHER JACKET. WOULD YOU LIKE SOME MORE MONOLOGUING. YES YOU WOULD.

The whole thing, except to give Spike some ..... much needed page time???? is totally pointless. It doesn't further any plots, it doesn't reveal any amazing back stories, and I have to add that I actually couldn't tell it was Spike until half-way through. The artist drew him so skinny-faced and he's sporting his all-new-important-hair-cut (that every artist has to use from now on, but who cares about keeping the Robots looking consistent) and except for him being brown-haired and in an army command, he looked nothing like Spike has previously.

I could even tell it was Spike when Figueroa did him, and damned if he wasn't butt-ugly there.

But yes. dkfjhsdkjfh Spike. I really liked him in AHM, he was awesome. But in the on going series he's a pile of testosterone-infused meat. He's a stud ladies and gentlemen, as showcased in issue 2.

kjsdhfjksdh blargh.

Rant out of the way, issues 9 through 11? AMAZING. Hello adorably dumb combaticons! Hello whiny Jetfire! Hello Bumblebee sassing Thundercracker! Hello Ratchet trying to laser-scalpel off Vortex's helicopter blades. HELLLLO BEAUTIFUL GUIDI ART AND THUNDERCRACKER'S LUSCIOUS LIPS.

<3 so much amazing.

Back at BotCon, [profile] justsmut, [personal profile] justbolts, and I were behaving like little shits as usual, and joking around about stuff.

Due to the resort location and the subject matter of the weekend, we came up with a number of random mini-strip comics for Transformers. These are ridiculous and cracky and totally break scale, but are terribly fun to do.

I went with the g1 cartoon style to make it easiest on myself to draw, but overall quality isn't great. Sloppy inking, overly fast colors, but whatever. XD I like them.

Here's #1 and #2, with more to follow as I get them done! There'll be about 20 of them when all's said and done.

Bacon is gross. )
