justnuts: (Optimus Megatron - Incoming)
[personal profile] justnuts
Got home from work at nearly 4am after a very lucrative night, got okay sleep, went out shopping with the GF and got many cute sweaterdresses from H&M, did not acquire a Blurr but did get a Red Alert for [livejournal.com profile] spacehussy, went through all my dancewear and sorted out a third to sell, watched Fantasia 2000, and then watched episode five of TF:P.

OH MY GOD EPISODE FIVE.

Okay, so, I started off on this series seriously underwhelmed. I did not, save for a few moments here and there, enjoy the first three episodes. Too much awkward dialog, frustrating human characters, weird designs and animation, too much exposition, waayyy too much telling and not showing, and the whole... killing off the guy I planned to make my favorite character.

Episodes four and five, however, have made me a believer in this show. Great action scenes, great tension, scenes that actually made me feel frightened for the cast, much of the awkwardness has been lost, dksjhfsdkjf Megatron Megatron Megatron Megatron.

I have said things here and there in various comments about how I felt on the show, but was waiting for Darkness Rising to finish up before tossing out my opinion, which is now: Outlook Favorable.

Opinions on the characters:

Optimus--
In the beginning, I was actually a little bored with him. I mean, sure, goddamn, PETER CULLEN. But the writers didn't do much with him besides NOBLE SPEECHES. HERE WOULD YOU LIKE MORE NOBLE? AND DID I MENTION SPEECHES? Save for the bit when he sasses Fowler, Prime didn't have much character, beyond your good ol' basic Optimus Prime. Episodes four and five really brought that around and gave him time to sass Megatron a little, or banter with Ratchet. Good Times.

Ratchet--
I would like to say that Ratchet is the best thing to happen to this show, but I think that title actually falls to Megatron, but anyways. Ratchet was amazing to me from the very start. He's.... not grouchy. Not the way he was in TFA, but he's a sasspot. He's the long suffering type who refuses to suffer in silence and I like the way he speaks up against anyone. Bolts and I like to call him Optimus' "Little woman". I love it. Ratchet also lucked out in the face department and got the only one in the whole goddamn show that I can actually call handsome.

Arcee--
I like her. But I'm a sucker for tough-as-nails-take-no-shit ladies. I understand why they took this route with her. They wanted a strong female character with a super recognizable name. Thus, Arcee the badass. It's not like you can have a believable female character be anything other than a soldier in the story set up they have, and they're not going to pick the name of a bit character the broader spectrum of people wont know. That aside, I love her dialog. I even forgive her attachment to Jack. She's going through a really tough time losing her boyfriend partner, has been given no time to grieve, and her connection with Jack probably feels uncomplicated and safe.

Bulkhead--
I want to like him. The way they play him out has really gotten me attached to him. But I'm still pissed off at the Big Dumb Fat Guy trope. Can we have a bruiser type without the idiot tag, please? JFC. That aside, I like him wayyyy more than TFA Bulkhead, I think what helps is the new voice actor.

Bumblebee--
.......I got nothin'. Aside from the speech impediment (is his translator broken?), the writers haven't really done squat with him. I guess they needed another big face to fill a spot, but they haven't used him well at all.

Cliffjumper--
SOB SOB SOB SOB SOB. I READ YOUR COMIC. I FELL IN LOVE WITH YOU. All the scenes with him, post resurrection, gripped my heart so painfully. Had we even been given a whole episode or two to get to know him, I'd have been bawling my eyes out over his death and the violation of his corpse.

Starscream--
Love the voice, love the characterization, hate his design the most. Of all the faces, I like his the least (and hey, at least sometimes Optimus has his covered!). I also detest his perpetual slump. But back to good things! He's got a great balance of subservience and defiance. It's obvious here that he and Megatron have yet again long played this game. The fact that the writers did not shy away with having him use some pretty serious torture makes him a deliciously evil villain. In many ways, he's more... evil in a personal way than Megatron is. Megatron is all grand schemes and conquering the galaxy and lusting over Prime. Starscream will notice the lowly human and take the time to personally murder him.

Soundwave--
I was very upset by the lack of voice and lack of face, but after seeing him in action, I am looking forward to what they'll do with him. His ability to sass Starscream with soundbites, and threaten the kids with taking a photo right back at them has perked my interest and anticipation!

Megatron--
Megatron, again I am made a fangirl anew! Welker's new voice, how the same crazy schemes (Cybertronian Zombies, in concept, ranks about the same LOLWHAT as stealing energy from crystals that suck heat from the Earth's core, really) have been rendered GODDAMN SCARY. His OVERLY OBVIOUS hard-on for Optimus is... nothing short of amazing. His heavy-handed treatment of Starscream is again beautifully crazy. And just sdkjhfkjsd every line out of him is fantastic. Either I'm blindly biased (a strong possibility) or the writers are some huge Megatron fanboys.

The humans! *gasp* Really, I understand the need for human characters, but goddamn, they failed as hard as the fucking Armada dub.

Jack--
He's.... starting to grow on me. Like a fungus, I think. Initially boring, typical reluctant door-mat of a hero type. I'm hoping that I see the potential for growth here. I like his mom, though.

Raf--
This is not a character, it's a walking plot device. Everything he does furthers the scene, very little is him being him. Which is a general, cute, super genius kid. I dunno, I think I liked the dweeb in the wheelchair better. At least he didn't claim to understand cybertronian fist go, or compete with the hacking power of mother fuckin' Soundwave. I wanted to like this kid, he's goddamn cute! But I haven't been given any opportunities to.

Miko--
Dear lord, where to start? We have the unnecessary what-the-fuck-is-that hairstyle, the selfish attitude that drags others into danger, the complete disregard for other's safety and well-being, the... what feels like exploitation of her foreign "Japaneseness". I mean, hey, if you want a Japanese character, why not an American-Japanese? Someone not a crazy technicolor stereotype? Or you want a transfer student? How about someone from a country that hasn't been done to death in popular media lately? I want to see Miko get better. I want her to get over herself. I want another solid female character, please, goddamnit.

Fowler--
OKAY I ADMIT IT. I like Fowler. I like his sassing Optimus and trying to boss him about. I like that he handles being attacked by a hostile robot with a level head and clever moves. I like him holding his own against Starscream in an overwhelming situation until the very end. I like his grudging gratitude to the Autobots once he recovers. I'd love to see him play a further role as nebulous ally in the future. I'd love to see his stupid "american patriotic" quips thrown out the fucking window. Just because he works for the government doesn't mean those lines are funny, guys!

Visuals:
Blegh. I'm not a fan of CG to start with, but they made some poor choices on the face designs. The scary mouths plus ridiculous eyebrows make for some really unattractive faces. And who the hell felt the need to steal a sharkmouth and paste it on Megatron's face? Really, the main villain has a mouth full of pointy teeth? How fucking grade school can you get? ...But anyways. I'm starting to assimilate. A few more episodes, and I'll be more used to the designs and will be able to get into the show better.

Cinematography:
A bit bland in the beginning, a few really bad angles and such. But #3 started ti pull things together and #4 and 5 were really good. Especially that bit in #4 with the kids in the middle of the fight and the sound dimmed and the angles got all crazy. That scene gave me goosebumps and made me genuinely concerned for the kids, despite how much I dislike them.

Plot:
A bit simple, but some interesting takes. I never liked the concept of Dark Energon (ok in a shoot-em-up video game, and eh okay at least in Exodus there was HUGE NEGATIVE SIDE AFFECT of using it) and I snort derisively at in the direction of whoever okayed the fucking zombies. Wondering where they'll take it from here. The end of Darkness Rising didn't really set things up for the on-going series. Of course Megsy'll be back, but I hate that CERTAINLY HE'S DEAD, OOPS MAYBE NOT approach. I'd rather have seen him spinning at crazy speeds through space, hurled by the explosion, screaming all the while. ::giggles at the mental picture::

Okay, that's it for that. I could prolly think of more, but it's late and I'm tired and a little crampy and I'm gonna go draw some robots doing it. ::salute::

....I need this icon, only in the Prime universe, and reversing the characters. (=w=;;
