Standing Ground character designs post #1

So I've spent the last few days laboring over designs for Standing Ground, a story that [livejournal.com profile] justbolts first kicked around as a fanfic idea and I volunteered to turn it into a comic.

I did exactly three pieces of transformers fanart before starting on this project and had never drawn any kind of robots before. I tend to go for organic things.

And I've learned one very important lesson: These fuckers are hard to draw!

But I'm starting to get the hang of it. There's definitely a learning curve. I had to scrap one design entirely because I did a couple designs after him and improved my robo-skills so much that he looked completely fugly and box-like in comparison. He is now quite better looking. B)

These designs were a collaborative effort between Bolts and myself. She provided examples of the alt-mode style and function, and pointed me towards helm and body styles she wanted. Ultimately, I ended up designing each vehicle and bot from the ground up, but did look to existing designs for inspiration.

This is a work of fiction. Any resemblance to mechs living or dead are purely coincidental.

But enough babble! On to the pics!

First up, Wrench! Leader of our main group!

~ Wrench ~
Position: Leader, spokesperson, designer, paper pusher

Bio: Wrench is a casual, even-tempered mech, who's short on formality and long on dry humor. He's a passionate worker and demands the same attention to detail and devotion from his crewmates, often to the point of being a hard-aft. The others know they can trust him to be honest, however, and to have their best interests at spark. He tends to be close-minded and stubborn about his beliefs. Despite that, he always makes an effort to listen, and takes the needs and feelings of his crew with utmost seriousness.

Next, loud mouthed Midline:

~Midline~
Position: construction, part-time demolitions

Bio: If you want something to go "boom", then Midline is your go-to bot, but he isn't too shabby about putting stuff back together, either. Theres not much Midline likes more than making noise and enjoying a good laugh, and he's always got his servos in the middle of one project or another. While his exuberance can be exhausting, he does know when to shut up and listen (usually). He's got the kind of iron fortitude combined with blindness to anything he doesn't like that makes him near impossible to offend or insult -- unfortunately, it also makes it tough for him to empathize anyone who isn't as, uh, thick as he is.

And, on the other side of the divide, Recoil:

~Recoil~

Bio: A warrior descended from warriors, Recoil takes a great deal of pride in her abilities and her heritage. She and change don't get on too well. Not to say that she's stuck in a routine or anything, but she believes the world is what it is for good reason, and anyone trying to shake it up is a lazy, entitled complainer who deserves to be shot at. A lot. When she's not taking up arms over totally unjustified criticism, she can be found reminiscing with buddies and working to improve her skills in battle.

And that's it for today! I need to clean up the other sketches and also redesign somebody else, but more will come up in the next few days. :d Thanks for checking it out~~~
